Timber Loader and Stacker

Hard, outdoor work on a fire protection association near Paarl, with training on chainsaws and fire safety. Someone who likes a bit of variety, but also likes doing things the right way, will enjoy this.

This post is Paarl-based, with most of your time spent at a fire protection association. Most weeks are 45 hours, in line with the BCEA.

• Clear and maintain firebreaks during the dry season
• Feed logs into sawmill machines and stack planks
• Plant seedlings in prepared pits at the right spacing
• Apply herbicide around young trees as instructed
• Wear chainsaw chaps, helmets and ear protection at all times
• Sharpen and service chainsaws daily
• Fell, debranch and cross-cut trees with a chainsaw

• Passes the medical check for fire crews
• Able to work in a crew and follow the crew leader
• Willing to work in remote areas
• Valid ID
• Available for early starts and fire-season standby

• Chainsaw and fire training at no cost
• Crew transport to plantations
• Fire-season standby allowance
• Full safety gear provided

• Mention fire fighting experience, even as a volunteer. Fire protection crews look for it before winter.
• Say you are fit and do not mind remote sites. Many applicants drop out after the first week, so recruiters test commitment.
