Job Description

Winter fire season is near, and a fire protection association near Pietermaritzburg needs crews ready. You don't need to be the loudest person in the room, just the one others can count on.

Location: Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal. Applicants who already live in the area get looked at first. The first two weeks are spent shadowing someone experienced.

The work, day to day

Sharpen and service chainsaws daily
Prune lower branches with pruning saws and ladders
Wear chainsaw chaps, helmets and ear protection at all times
Feed logs into sawmill machines and stack planks
Fell, debranch and cross-cut trees with a chainsaw
Clear and maintain firebreaks during the dry season
Fight veld fires with beaters and water packs under a crew leader

What you need

Physically strong and fit for steep slopes
Passes the medical check for fire crews
Willing to work in remote areas
Available for early starts and fire-season standby
