Apprentice Motor Mechanic (merSETA)

You'll service, diagnose and repair cars in a busy used car dealership workshop in Umhlanga. It's a practical job: you'll see what you got done before you go home.

The work is in Umhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal, so you'll need a reliable way to get there every day. The first two weeks are spent shadowing someone experienced.

• Quote extra work you find and pass it to the service advisor for approval
• Diagnose engine, ABS and airbag faults with an OBD-II diagnostic scanner
• Do wheel alignments and balancing on the alignment bay
• Road test vehicles before and after repairs
• Update control unit software when the manufacturer releases a campaign
• Carry out roadworthy pre-checks on lights, brakes and steering
• Keep your bay, tools and special service tools clean and counted

• Your own basic toolbox
• At least 3 years as a qualified mechanic in a dealership or workshop
• Able to meet flat-rate or sold-hour targets
• Motor mechanic trade test certificate (Red Seal) or occupational certificate at NQF 4

• Staff discount on parts and services
• Pay at or above the motor industry bargaining council rates
• Productivity bonus on sold hours above target

• If you hit or beat your sold-hour target, say by how much. Workshop managers love that number.
• Do not leave gaps unexplained. Say if you were working for yourself or doing mobile repairs.
