Job Description

You'll keep machines turning and parts in spec at the general engineering workshop in East London. If you learn fast and don't mind being shown things twice, you'll settle in within a few weeks.

Home base is a general engineering workshop on the East London side of Eastern Cape. Start date: as soon as possible for the right person.

What you'll actually do

  • Machine shafts, bushes and keyways on a lathe and milling machine
  • Maintain hydraulic and pneumatic systems on production lines
  • Inspect and adjust conveyors, chains and sprockets
  • Build and repair press tools, jigs and moulds
  • Replace bearings, seals and couplings on pumps, gearboxes and motors
  • Record work and spares used on the job card or CMMS

You'll need

  • At least 2 years as a qualified artisan in a factory or workshop
  • Willing to work shifts, standby and weekend shutdowns
  • Own basic hand tools, or willing to build up a set
  • Trade test as Fitter and Turner, Fitter, Millwright or Toolmaker

What you get

  • Paid overtime on shutdowns
  • Chance to study further toward a technician diploma
  • Shift and standby allowances

How to apply

  1. Make sure the role, the hours and working in East London really suit you before you apply.
  2. Get these ready, because shortlisted people are asked for them straight away: references from maintenance managers plus trade test certificate plus N-certificates.
  3. Use the form on this page. It takes about two minutes and you don't need to upload anything yet.
  4. Keep your phone on. Shortlisted applicants are contacted by call, SMS or WhatsApp within 10 working days.

Your application joins the How2Apply talent pool for this role, and we put shortlisted people forward to employers hiring in and around East London.

How2Apply never charges you to apply, for training, for uniforms or for a "placement fee". If anyone asks you for money, it is a scam.

Tips to get shortlisted

  • Write your trade and trade test year first, then the machines you know, like "Filling lines, pumps, gearboxes".
  • If you can machine parts as well as fit them, say so clearly. Many factories want both skills in one person.
