Automatic Gearbox Technician

This independent service workshop in Kempton Park needs a qualified mechanic who can handle services, repairs and electrical faults. Bring a calm head on busy days and you'll be fine.

This post is Kempton Park-based, with most of your time spent at an independent service workshop. Most weeks are 45 hours, in line with the BCEA.

• Coach the apprentice on your bay through basic services
• Carry out scheduled services to the manufacturer's checklist and interval
• Write clear job card notes on what you found and what you fixed
• Replace clutches, brake pads, discs, shocks and timing belts
• Diagnose engine, ABS and airbag faults with an OBD-II diagnostic scanner
• Quote extra work you find and pass it to the service advisor for approval
• Road test vehicles before and after repairs

• Motor mechanic trade test certificate (Red Seal) or occupational certificate at NQF 4
• Confident with diagnostic scan tools and wiring diagrams
• Neat with customer vehicles: seat covers, floor mats and no grease marks
• Able to meet flat-rate or sold-hour targets
• Your own basic toolbox
• At least 3 years as a qualified mechanic in a dealership or workshop

• High-voltage hybrid or EV safety training
• Automatic gearbox or DSG repair experience

• Pay at or above the motor industry bargaining council rates
• Tool allowance or tool insurance
• Staff discount on parts and services

• If you hit or beat your sold-hour target, say by how much. Workshop managers love that number.
• Do not leave gaps unexplained. Say if you were working for yourself or doing mobile repairs.
