Berry Picker (Tunnel Farm)

You'll pick, prune and look after crops on a berry tunnel farm near Cape Town CBD through the season. This is a good step for someone who wants proper routine and a manager who notices good work.

You'll be based at a berry tunnel farm in Cape Town CBD. Living nearby, or on a taxi route to it, really helps. Most weeks are 45 hours, in line with the BCEA.

• Weed beds by hand or with a hoe
• Follow the re-entry times after spraying, as the signs show
• Pick fruit or vegetables at the right ripeness and size, gently
• Fill crates or bins and carry them to the collection point
• Keep your picking card or tag count for daily pay
• Prune and thin fruit trees and vines to the farm's method
• Wash hands and use the field toilets for food safety

• Valid ID or work permit
• Able to work outdoors in heat, cold and rain
• Follows farm hygiene and safety rules
• Willing to start at sunrise
• Physically fit for bending, lifting and climbing ladders
• Careful with fruit, since bruised fruit is rejected

• Previous harvest or picking experience
• Pruning experience on vines or fruit trees
• Living on or near the farm

• Chance of a permanent post after good seasons
• Farm transport from nearby towns
• Piece-rate bonus on top of daily wage
• Seasonal accommodation on some farms

• Have your bank details ready. Most farms pay into a bank account and will not start you without it.
• If you have picked before, say which crop and how many seasons. Farms rehire experienced pickers first.
