Job Description

If your welds pass X-ray, this petrochemical shutdown contractor in Newcastle wants you. You don't need to be the loudest person in the room, just the one others can count on.

You'll be based at a petrochemical shutdown contractor in Newcastle. Living nearby, or on a taxi route to it, really helps. There's a probation period of three months before the contract is confirmed.

What your day looks like

  • Weld carbon steel pipe in the 6G position using GTAW root and SMAW fill
  • Set up MIG and flux-cored machines for long production runs
  • Follow the welding procedure specification for every joint you weld
  • Read fabrication drawings and cutting lists before you mark out plate
  • Cut and bevel plate with oxy-fuel, plasma and a bevelling machine

What you need

  • At least 2 years of production or site welding after qualifying
  • Willing to work shutdowns, long shifts and weekends when the plant is down
  • You can read fabrication and isometric drawings without help
  • Steady hands and good eyesight, with or without glasses
  • Boilermaker or welder trade test certificate, or current SAIW welder qualification

On offer

  • Accommodation and meals paid on out-of-town shutdowns
  • Leather welding PPE and auto-darkening helmet supplied
  • Coding renewals paid by the employer

Applying, step by step

  1. Read the "What you need" list above. If you tick most of it, go ahead and apply.
  2. Get these ready, because shortlisted people are asked for them straight away: your ID document or smart ID card copy, photos of recent work, if you have them plus current welder coding certificates (check the dates).
  3. Send your details with the form below. Add one or two lines about similar work you've done.
  4. Keep your phone on. Shortlisted applicants are contacted by call, SMS or WhatsApp within 9 working days.

Tips to get shortlisted

  • Expect a practical welding test on the first day. Bring your own gloves and chipping hammer so you feel at home.
  • If you have worked shutdowns, name the type of plant, like refinery or sugar mill. It proves you know the site rules.
