Job Description

The pressure vessel manufacturer in Polokwane needs a coded welder who can hold a WPS and deliver clean, sound joints. You don't need to be the loudest person in the room, just the one others can count on.

The site is in Polokwane; early starts mean public transport timing matters, so check your route before applying. Weekend work is on a roster, so you won't be on every weekend.

What your day looks like

  • Cut and bevel plate with oxy-fuel, plasma and a bevelling machine
  • Sign off your weld map and traceability sheets for each spool
  • Grind and repair welds flagged by the QC inspector
  • Prepare joints for radiographic and dye penetrant testing
  • Keep a hot work permit open and a fire watch in place during shutdowns
  • Fit up beams, columns and bracing with the correct gaps and alignment
  • Follow the welding procedure specification for every joint you weld

What you need

  • You can read fabrication and isometric drawings without help
  • At least 2 years of production or site welding after qualifying
  • Willing to work shutdowns, long shifts and weekends when the plant is down
  • Valid welder coding to ISO 9606-1 or ASME IX in the processes the job needs

Nice if you have

  • Orbital or automatic welding experience
  • Duplex or chrome-moly welding experience

What you get

  • Accommodation and meals paid on out-of-town shutdowns
  • Leather welding PPE and auto-darkening helmet supplied
  • Shutdown bonus and site allowance for work away from home

How to apply for this job

  1. Check you meet the must-haves first; recruiters filter on those before anything else.
  2. Get these ready, because shortlisted people are asked for them straight away: photos of recent work, if you have them plus current welder coding certificates (check the dates).
  3. Fill in the short form below with your name and a phone number you actually answer.
  4. Keep your phone on. Shortlisted applicants are contacted by call, SMS or WhatsApp within 5 working days.

Your application joins the How2Apply talent pool for this role, and we put shortlisted people forward to employers hiring in and around Polokwane.

How2Apply never charges you to apply, for training, for uniforms or for a "placement fee". If anyone asks you for money, it is a scam.

Tips to get shortlisted

  • Expect a practical welding test on the first day. Bring your own gloves and chipping hammer so you feel at home.
  • Expired codings are the number one reason welders are turned away at the gate. Check dates before you apply.
