Job Description

Strong welding and plate work for the petrochemical shutdown contractor in Randburg, with real drawings and real tolerances. You'll work with a small crew, so being easy to work with matters as much as skill.

You'll be based at a petrochemical shutdown contractor in Randburg. Living nearby, or on a taxi route to it, really helps.

The work, day to day

  • Roll and form plate for tanks, chutes and hoppers
  • Sign off your weld map and traceability sheets for each spool
  • Weld carbon steel pipe in the 6G position using GTAW root and SMAW fill
  • Follow the welding procedure specification for every joint you weld
  • Prepare joints for radiographic and dye penetrant testing

Must-haves

  • Willing to work shutdowns, long shifts and weekends when the plant is down
  • At least 2 years of production or site welding after qualifying
  • Boilermaker or welder trade test certificate, or current SAIW welder qualification
  • You can read fabrication and isometric drawings without help

What you get

  • Coding renewals paid by the employer
  • Shutdown bonus and site allowance for work away from home
  • Leather welding PPE and auto-darkening helmet supplied

How to apply

  1. Read the "What you need" list above. If you tick most of it, go ahead and apply.
  2. Keep copies of these ready to send: photos of recent work, if you have them, trade test certificate or SAIW qualification plus your ID document or smart ID card copy.
  3. Use the form on this page. It takes about two minutes and you don't need to upload anything yet.
  4. If you're shortlisted you'll hear from us within 5 working days, usually by phone.

Your application joins the How2Apply talent pool for this role, and we put shortlisted people forward to employers hiring in and around Randburg.

How2Apply never charges you to apply, for training, for uniforms or for a "placement fee". If anyone asks you for money, it is a scam.

How to stand out

  • List each coding separately with the standard, process, position and expiry date. "Coded welder" on its own tells a recruiter nothing.
  • Expect a practical welding test on the first day. Bring your own gloves and chipping hammer so you feel at home.
