Bricklayer's Assistant

Hard outdoor work on a road rehabilitation project in Newcastle, with a chance to learn a trade while you earn. If you learn fast and don't mind being shown things twice, you'll settle in within a few weeks.

Home base is a road rehabilitation project on the Newcastle side of KwaZulu-Natal. Start is planned for the beginning of next month.

• Sign the daily safety talk register before work starts
• Clean tools, mixers and wheelbarrows at the end of each day
• Compact soil and layer bedding sand with a plate compactor
• Set up barriers, cones and signs around open trenches
• Dig trenches and foundations to the depth the foreman marks
• Mix concrete and mortar by hand or with a small mixer
• Pass tools and materials to the plumber or electrician as needed

• Willing to start early, often at 06:30
• Prepared to travel between sites in the area
• Grade 8 or higher
• A clean record is preferred for some government sites
• Physically strong and fit for outdoor work in all weather
• Able to follow instructions from a foreman or artisan

• Some experience with a jackhammer, grinder or plate compactor
• Registered on your ward or municipal job-seeker database
• Living near the site (many projects hire local labour)

• Learn from artisans with a chance to move up to assistant
• Overtime on weekend pours and deadline days
• Boots, hard hat and overalls issued on site

• List past sites by name and what you did there, like "mixed concrete, laid kerbs". It proves you have done real site work.
• If a foreman can vouch for you, put their number on your CV. Site hiring runs on word of mouth.
