Candidate Attorney (Litigation)

Get real court exposure and supervision at a legal aid office in East London while you prepare for board exams. This role rewards consistency more than flash.

This post is East London-based, with most of your time spent at a legal aid office. Start date: as soon as possible for the right person.

• Keep matter files updated and diarise court dates and deadlines
• Attend court with counsel and take notes during trials
• Record your time on the practice management system every day
• Prepare affidavits and notices of motion for your principal to review
• Research case law and legislation on SAFLII and Juta or LexisNexis

• Good legal research and clear written English
• Clear criminal record, as required for admission
• Code B driver's licence and a reliable car for court runs
• Ready to sign a practical vocational training contract registered with the LPC

• Second official language used by the firm's clients
• Moot court or legal clinic experience

• Paid PLT course fees at some firms
• Study leave for board exams
• Mentorship from an experienced principal
• Travel allowance for court runs

• Apply early in the year, as most firms fill articles from January to March.
• Attach a short legal writing sample; firms judge candidates heavily on drafting.
