Carpenter (Roof Trusses & Ceilings)

You'll build it with your hands: walls, floors, roofs and finishes on the housing development site in Richards Bay. Bring a calm head on busy days and you'll be fine.

This post is Richards Bay-based, with most of your time spent at a housing development site. Hours are mostly Monday to Friday, with the odd Saturday in busy months.

• Tile floors, showers and splashbacks, including cutting around fittings
• Carry bricks and materials to the workface and keep the scaffold clear
• Fix roof trusses, purlins and brandering for ceilings
• Build and strip formwork for columns, beams and slabs
• Mix mortar and plaster to the right ratio for the job

• Safety boots of your own for the first week, if possible
• Punctual every morning, even in winter
• Physically strong enough for a full day of lifting and bending outside
• Able to follow a foreman's instructions and read basic measurements
• Willing to move between sites in the same city
• Proven experience in at least one trade, shown by references or a practical test

• Trade test in bricklaying, carpentry or plastering
• Experience on NHBRC-registered housing projects
• CETA or NQF 2 or 3 certificate in your trade

• Chance to move up to a gang leader post
• Weekly or fortnightly pay, always on time
• UIF and COIDA registration from day one
• PPE supplied: hard hat, gloves, reflective vest

• Bring photos of your work on your phone. A foreman believes a straight wall more than a long CV.
• Be ready to do a short practical test on site. Arrive early with your own tools if you have them.
