Chainsaw Operator (Timber Felling)

Hard, outdoor work on an eucalyptus plantation near Johannesburg CBD, with training on chainsaws and fire safety. People who do well here are steady, honest and not scared to ask when something is unclear.

You'll be based at an eucalyptus plantation in Johannesburg CBD. Living nearby, or on a taxi route to it, really helps.

• Prune lower branches with pruning saws and ladders
• Sharpen and service chainsaws daily
• Plant seedlings in prepared pits at the right spacing
• Clear and maintain firebreaks during the dry season
• Wear chainsaw chaps, helmets and ear protection at all times

• Willing to work in remote areas
• Passes the medical check for fire crews
• Available for early starts and fire-season standby
• Physically strong and fit for steep slopes
• Follows safety rules strictly around machines and fires
• Valid ID

• First-aid training
• Fire fighting training

• Say you are fit and do not mind remote sites. Many applicants drop out after the first week, so recruiters test commitment.
• Mention fire fighting experience, even as a volunteer. Fire protection crews look for it before winter.
