Chainsaw Operator (Timber Felling)

Hard, outdoor work on a sawmill near Kathu, with training on chainsaws and fire safety. Someone who likes a bit of variety, but also likes doing things the right way, will enjoy this.

Home base is a sawmill on the Kathu side of Northern Cape. Start is planned for the beginning of next month.

• Fight veld fires with beaters and water packs under a crew leader
• Apply herbicide around young trees as instructed
• Prune lower branches with pruning saws and ladders
• Sharpen and service chainsaws daily
• Wear chainsaw chaps, helmets and ear protection at all times
• Stack logs by length for loading onto trucks

• Physically strong and fit for steep slopes
• Able to work in a crew and follow the crew leader
• Passes the medical check for fire crews
• Follows safety rules strictly around machines and fires
• Available for early starts and fire-season standby
• Willing to work in remote areas

• Previous plantation or sawmill experience
• Chainsaw operator certificate
• First-aid training

• Crew transport to plantations
• Chainsaw and fire training at no cost
• Full safety gear provided
• Fire-season standby allowance

• If you have a chainsaw ticket, put it at the top. Certified operators earn more and are hired first.
• Mention fire fighting experience, even as a volunteer. Fire protection crews look for it before winter.
