Coded Welder (6G, ASME IX)

You'll cut, fit and weld steel to drawing in a busy structural steel fabrication workshop in Johannesburg CBD. It's the kind of job where doing the basics well every day gets you noticed.

You'll be based at a structural steel fabrication workshop in Johannesburg CBD. Living nearby, or on a taxi route to it, really helps.

• Set up MIG and flux-cored machines for long production runs
• Read fabrication drawings and cutting lists before you mark out plate
• Roll and form plate for tanks, chutes and hoppers
• Sign off your weld map and traceability sheets for each spool
• Follow the welding procedure specification for every joint you weld

• Steady hands and good eyesight, with or without glasses
• You can read fabrication and isometric drawings without help
• At least 2 years of production or site welding after qualifying
• Willing to work shutdowns, long shifts and weekends when the plant is down
• Boilermaker or welder trade test certificate, or current SAIW welder qualification

• Rigging or crane signalling certificate
• Orbital or automatic welding experience
• Experience on structural work to AWS D1.1

• Shutdown bonus and site allowance for work away from home
• Coding renewals paid by the employer
• Accommodation and meals paid on out-of-town shutdowns
• Leather welding PPE and auto-darkening helmet supplied

• If you have worked shutdowns, name the type of plant, like refinery or sugar mill. It proves you know the site rules.
• List each coding separately with the standard, process, position and expiry date. "Coded welder" on its own tells a recruiter nothing.
