Coded Welder (6G, ASME IX)

You'll cut, fit and weld steel to drawing in a busy stainless steel equipment manufacturer in Mbombela. If you learn fast and don't mind being shown things twice, you'll settle in within a few weeks.

This post is Mbombela-based, with most of your time spent at a stainless steel equipment manufacturer. The first two weeks are spent shadowing someone experienced.

• Read fabrication drawings and cutting lists before you mark out plate
• Fit up beams, columns and bracing with the correct gaps and alignment
• Keep a hot work permit open and a fire watch in place during shutdowns
• Sign off your weld map and traceability sheets for each spool
• Follow the welding procedure specification for every joint you weld
• Cut and bevel plate with oxy-fuel, plasma and a bevelling machine

• Medical fitness certificate for industrial sites, or willing to get one
• At least 2 years of production or site welding after qualifying
• Boilermaker or welder trade test certificate, or current SAIW welder qualification
• You can read fabrication and isometric drawings without help
• Steady hands and good eyesight, with or without glasses

• SAIW welding inspector course, even at Level 1
• Rigging or crane signalling certificate

• Accommodation and meals paid on out-of-town shutdowns
• Leather welding PPE and auto-darkening helmet supplied
• Shutdown bonus and site allowance for work away from home
• Coding renewals paid by the employer

• List each coding separately with the standard, process, position and expiry date. "Coded welder" on its own tells a recruiter nothing.
• If you have worked shutdowns, name the type of plant, like refinery or sugar mill. It proves you know the site rules.
