Coded Welder (Pressure Vessels)

The structural steel fabrication workshop in Pietermaritzburg needs a coded welder who can hold a WPS and deliver clean, sound joints. You don't need to be the loudest person in the room, just the one others can count on.

The work is in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, so you'll need a reliable way to get there every day. Overtime comes up in peak season and is paid.

• Fit up beams, columns and bracing with the correct gaps and alignment
• Set up MIG and flux-cored machines for long production runs
• Sign off your weld map and traceability sheets for each spool
• Cut and bevel plate with oxy-fuel, plasma and a bevelling machine
• Prepare joints for radiographic and dye penetrant testing
• Follow the welding procedure specification for every joint you weld
• Keep a hot work permit open and a fire watch in place during shutdowns

• Willing to work shutdowns, long shifts and weekends when the plant is down
• Boilermaker or welder trade test certificate, or current SAIW welder qualification
• Valid welder coding to ISO 9606-1 or ASME IX in the processes the job needs
• At least 2 years of production or site welding after qualifying

• Orbital or automatic welding experience
• Experience on structural work to AWS D1.1

• Leather welding PPE and auto-darkening helmet supplied
• Accommodation and meals paid on out-of-town shutdowns
• Coding renewals paid by the employer
• Shutdown bonus and site allowance for work away from home

• List each coding separately with the standard, process, position and expiry date. "Coded welder" on its own tells a recruiter nothing.
• Expired codings are the number one reason welders are turned away at the gate. Check dates before you apply.
