Construction Worker (Bricklaying Assistant)

The housing development site in Soweto needs skilled hands and helpers who know the basics of the building trade. Expect to be trusted with real work from your first week.

Location: Soweto, Gauteng. Applicants who already live in the area get looked at first. Shifts rotate, so you'll need to be flexible about days and nights.

• Clean your tools and sweep your work area before knocking off
• Build and strip formwork for columns, beams and slabs
• Fix roof trusses, purlins and brandering for ceilings
• Carry bricks and materials to the workface and keep the scaffold clear
• Wear your hard hat, boots and harness wherever the foreman says
• Cut, bend and tie reinforcing steel to the bending schedule

• Safety boots of your own for the first week, if possible
• Able to follow a foreman's instructions and read basic measurements
• Willing to move between sites in the same city
• Punctual every morning, even in winter
• Physically strong enough for a full day of lifting and bending outside
• Understands basic site safety like scaffolds and open trenches

• Weekly or fortnightly pay, always on time
• Chance to move up to a gang leader post
• Transport from a pick-up point to site

• Be ready to do a short practical test on site. Arrive early with your own tools if you have them.
• Bring photos of your work on your phone. A foreman believes a straight wall more than a long CV.
