Cost Estimator (Shopfitting)

You'll measure, price and manage the money on building projects for the quantity surveying practice in Pinetown. It's a practical job: you'll see what you got done before you go home.

The site is in Pinetown; early starts mean public transport timing matters, so check your route before applying. There's a probation period of three months before the contract is confirmed.

• Get quotes from subcontractors and compare them line by line
• Update cash flow forecasts for the project manager
• Price tenders using supplier quotes, labour rates and plant costs
• Draft subcontract agreements and payment schedules
• Value variations and prepare claims under JBCC or GCC conditions
• Use measuring software to do take-offs from PDF and CAD drawings
• Prepare the final account at the end of the project

• At least 3 years of QS work in private practice or with a contractor
• Accurate with numbers and able to back up every figure you certify
• BSc, BTech or Diploma in Quantity Surveying
• Understanding of JBCC Principal Building Agreement clauses
• Strong Excel skills, including formulas and pivot tables
• Code 08 licence for site visits

• Estimating software experience on top of Excel
• Experience with civil bills using the SANS 1200 standard

• Study support for an honours degree
• Travel allowance for site visits

• Paid SACQSP registration fees and CPD courses

• Recruiters often give a short take-off test. Practise measuring a simple house plan under time pressure before the interview.
• List projects with their contract value and whether you worked for the client side or the contractor side.
