Domestic Helper (3 Days a Week)

Cleaning, laundry and a hand with the kids: that is the week in a retired couple's cottage in Vereeniging. You don't need to be the loudest person in the room, just the one others can count on.

Home base is a retired couple's cottage on the Vereeniging side of Gauteng. Most weeks are 45 hours, in line with the BCEA.

• Get children ready for school and supervise homework in the afternoon
• Clean windows and patio doors once a week
• Keep a list of cleaning supplies running low for the employer
• Change bed linen and make beds
• Help an elderly person with meals, medication reminders and light walking
• Clean bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen and living areas on a weekly rotation
• Water indoor plants and feed pets

• Able to speak and understand basic English
• Neat, organised and able to work without being supervised
• Willing to follow the family's house rules and routines
• Trustworthy, with references from previous employers you can share
• South African ID or valid work permit

• Own room with bathroom for live-in posts
• Paid annual leave and public holidays as the law requires
• Registered for UIF and COIDA by the employer
• Transport money for live-out staff

• Ask for a written contract and to be registered for UIF. Good employers expect the question and it protects you.
• Say plainly what you can and cannot do: cooking, ironing, childcare, driving. It avoids arguments later and families like honesty.
