Domestic Worker with Elderly Care

Steady household work in a retired couple's cottage in Somerset West, with clear days and hours agreed upfront. You don't need to be the loudest person in the room, just the one others can count on.

This post is Somerset West-based, with most of your time spent at a retired couple's cottage. The first two weeks are spent shadowing someone experienced.

• Dust furniture, ornaments and skirting boards
• Change bed linen and make beds
• Help an elderly person with meals, medication reminders and light walking
• Get children ready for school and supervise homework in the afternoon
• Prepare simple meals or school lunches when asked
• Keep a list of cleaning supplies running low for the employer
• Clean bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen and living areas on a weekly rotation

• Neat, organised and able to work without being supervised
• Trustworthy, with references from previous employers you can share
• South African ID or valid work permit
• Able to speak and understand basic English
• Good with children and patient
• Willing to follow the family's house rules and routines

• Experience caring for an older person
• Cooking experience with family meals
• A driver's licence for school lifts

• Registered for UIF and COIDA by the employer
• Written contract with fixed hours and duties
• Paid annual leave and public holidays as the law requires
• Own room with bathroom for live-in posts

• Say plainly what you can and cannot do: cooking, ironing, childcare, driving. It avoids arguments later and families like honesty.
• Families hire on trust, so make references your strongest part. Write the employer's name, suburb, years worked and phone number for each one.
