Farm General Worker (Vegetable Fields)

Crops do not wait, and a berry tunnel farm near Epping needs extra hands this season. It's the kind of job where doing the basics well every day gets you noticed.

Location: Epping, Western Cape. Applicants who already live in the area get looked at first. The first two weeks are spent shadowing someone experienced.

• Clean and store picking bags, ladders and secateurs
• Plant seedlings in rows at the spacing shown
• Prune and thin fruit trees and vines to the farm's method
• Keep your picking card or tag count for daily pay
• Wash hands and use the field toilets for food safety
• Pick fruit or vegetables at the right ripeness and size, gently
• Tie up tomato and pepper plants in tunnels

• Available for the full harvest season
• Careful with fruit, since bruised fruit is rejected
• Valid ID or work permit
• Follows farm hygiene and safety rules
• Physically fit for bending, lifting and climbing ladders
• Willing to start at sunrise

• Living on or near the farm
• Tractor or quad bike experience
• Pruning experience on vines or fruit trees

• Piece-rate bonus on top of daily wage
• Chance of a permanent post after good seasons
• Farm transport from nearby towns
• Seasonal accommodation on some farms

• If you have picked before, say which crop and how many seasons. Farms rehire experienced pickers first.
• Have your bank details ready. Most farms pay into a bank account and will not start you without it.
