Job Description

Your care keeps residents at a retirement village frail care centre in Durban Central safe, clean and comfortable through the day. It's the kind of job where doing the basics well every day gets you noticed.

What your day looks like

  • Follow infection control rules, including hand hygiene and safe sharps disposal
  • Make beds, change linen and keep the rooms clean and uncluttered
  • Turn bed-bound patients on schedule and check pressure areas for early sores
  • Take and chart temperature, pulse, blood pressure and blood glucose
  • Spot confusion, falls risk or changes in mood and tell the nurse in charge
  • Hand out oral medication under the supervision of a registered nurse
  • Keep the fluid and food intake charts accurate for every patient

Must-haves

  • At least 1 year of hands-on patient care
  • Accredited home-based care or ancillary health care certificate for caregiver posts
  • Matric or NQF Level 4 equivalent
  • First aid Level 1 or BLS certificate
  • SANC enrolment as an Enrolled Nurse or Enrolled Nursing Auxiliary for nursing posts
  • Able to work shifts, including nights and weekends

Helpful, not essential

  • A second South African language spoken by the patients you'll serve
  • Code B or Code 8 driver's licence for home visits
  • Experience in a frail care or hospice setting

What's in it for you

  • Uniform supplied
  • Meals provided on shift at many frail care centres
  • Transport home after late shifts at some facilities

How to apply

  1. Make sure the role, the hours and working in Durban Central really suit you before you apply.
  2. Get these ready, because shortlisted people are asked for them straight away: first aid or BLS certificate plus certified copy of your SANC enrolment or caregiver certificate.
  3. Send your details with the form below. Add one or two lines about similar work you've done.
  4. If you're shortlisted you'll hear from us within 9 working days, usually by phone.

How to stand out

  • Name the type of patients you've cared for, such as stroke patients or dementia residents, in your first CV line.
  • If you're a caregiver, attach the certificate from the training provider, not just a letter saying you attended.
