Kitchen Assistant (Prep & Scullery)

Service is busy at this hospital catering unit in Umhlanga, so steady hands and a tidy station matter here. You'll work with a small crew, so being easy to work with matters as much as skill.

Location: Umhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal. Applicants who already live in the area get looked at first. Shifts rotate, so you'll need to be flexible about days and nights.

• Clean down your section, deep-clean the fryer and scrub the extractor filters.
• Receive deliveries, check weights and reject short-dated produce.
• Bake breads, pastries or desserts for the morning buffet.
• Prep veg, sauces, marinades and portions from the daily mise en place list.
• Run your station during service and call back every ticket from the pass.
• Plate to the spec photo so every dish looks the same.
• Cook for banquets and conference lunches of 100 to 400 guests.

• You take instruction from the head chef without drama
• A culinary certificate or City & Guilds, or solid on-the-job experience
• Comfortable in heat, on your feet, for long split shifts
• 1 to 3 years in a busy commercial kitchen
• Weekend, holiday and evening work is part of the deal
• You know food safety basics under R638 and HACCP

• Chef whites and safety shoes provided
• Two staff meals per shift
