Legal Counsel (Compliance and POPIA) – Fixed-Term

Take on a real caseload and build your name at a financial services company legal department in East London. People who do well here are steady, honest and not scared to ask when something is unclear.

You'll report in East London. Relocation is not covered for this one. The first two weeks are spent shadowing someone experienced.

• Draft and review contracts, shareholder agreements and legal opinions
• Brief counsel and prepare them for trial and opposed motions
• Advise clients on risk, settlement and next steps in plain language
• Supervise and train candidate attorneys and paralegals
• Appear in the magistrate's court, CCMA, Labour Court or High Court as your matters need
• Negotiate settlements and draft settlement agreements

• Enrolled with the Legal Practice Council and holding a current Fidelity Fund certificate if you handle trust money
• Right of appearance in the High Court for litigation posts
• Sound judgement under deadline pressure
• LLB and admission as an attorney of the High Court of South Africa

• Certificate in data protection or compliance
• Notarial admission

• Clear path to directorship at some firms

• Firms check your LPC standing, so get your certificate of good standing before you apply.
• Give a short matter list with outcomes, stripped of client names, to prove your experience.
