Job Description

Retail in Umhlanga runs on thin margins, and a retail distribution centre needs someone guarding its stock. This role rewards consistency more than flash.

You'll be based at a retail distribution centre in Umhlanga. Living nearby, or on a taxi route to it, really helps. You'll start with a short induction before working on your own.

What you'll actually do

  • Walk the floor in plain clothes and watch for shoplifting behaviour
  • Share trends with the store manager each week
  • Attend court as a witness when a case goes to trial
  • Tag high-value stock and check security tags at the doors
  • Check receiving bay deliveries against invoices and seal numbers
  • Detain suspects lawfully and call SAPS, then write a statement

What you need

  • Discreet, observant and honest
  • Available for retail hours including month-end weekends
  • Matric or equivalent NQF Level 4
  • Good report writing
  • Knowledge of lawful arrest and search under the Criminal Procedure Act
  • PSIRA registration, Grade C at least

On offer

  • Retail trading hours, no night shift in most stores
  • Staff discount at the retailer
  • Monthly recovery incentives
  • Plain clothes work (no uniform in detective roles)

Applying, step by step

  1. Make sure the role, the hours and working in Umhlanga really suit you before you apply.
  2. Have the following on hand (clear photos on your phone are fine at first): matric certificate plus loss prevention or investigation course certificates.
  3. Use the form on this page. It takes about two minutes and you don't need to upload anything yet.
  4. Watch for a call or WhatsApp from How2Apply over the next 8 working days.

Your application joins the How2Apply talent pool for this role, and we put shortlisted people forward to employers hiring in and around Umhlanga.

How2Apply never charges you to apply, for training, for uniforms or for a "placement fee". If anyone asks you for money, it is a scam.

Before you hit apply

  • Keep your appearance low-key for the interview. Detectives need to blend in with shoppers.
  • Show you know the legal limits of search and arrest. A single unlawful arrest can cost a store badly, so they will ask about it.
