Maintenance Fitter (Food Factory) – Permanent

Bearings, gearboxes, pumps and lathes: this sugar mill in Sandton needs your hands on them. If you learn fast and don't mind being shown things twice, you'll settle in within a few weeks.

This post is Sandton-based, with most of your time spent at a sugar mill.

• Inspect and adjust conveyors, chains and sprockets
• Align shafts with a laser alignment tool after every drive change
• Follow the lockout procedure before any work on machinery
• Record work and spares used on the job card or CMMS
• Replace bearings, seals and couplings on pumps, gearboxes and motors
• Machine shafts, bushes and keyways on a lathe and milling machine
• Program and run CNC machines from engineering drawings

• Own basic hand tools, or willing to build up a set
• Basic understanding of the General Machinery Regulations
• Willing to work shifts, standby and weekend shutdowns
• N2 or N3 engineering subjects
• Trade test as Fitter and Turner, Fitter, Millwright or Toolmaker
• You read engineering drawings and measure with micrometers and verniers

• Millwright trade test, since it covers both mechanical and electrical
• Hydraulic and pneumatic courses

• Tool allowance
• Paid overtime on shutdowns
• Shift and standby allowances
• Chance to study further toward a technician diploma

• Expect a practical test. Measure twice and work cleanly, because the assessor watches your habits as much as the result.
• If you can machine parts as well as fit them, say so clearly. Many factories want both skills in one person.
