Maintenance Technician (Electro-Mechanical)

Bearings, gearboxes, pumps and lathes: this beverage bottling plant in Paarl needs your hands on them. It's a practical job: you'll see what you got done before you go home.

You'll be based at a beverage bottling plant in Paarl. Living nearby, or on a taxi route to it, really helps. The first two weeks are spent shadowing someone experienced.

• Record work and spares used on the job card or CMMS
• Program and run CNC machines from engineering drawings
• Build and repair press tools, jigs and moulds
• Inspect and adjust conveyors, chains and sprockets
• Replace bearings, seals and couplings on pumps, gearboxes and motors
• Respond to breakdowns and get the line running again safely
• Align shafts with a laser alignment tool after every drive change

• Own basic hand tools, or willing to build up a set
• Trade test as Fitter and Turner, Fitter, Millwright or Toolmaker
• At least 2 years as a qualified artisan in a factory or workshop
• Basic understanding of the General Machinery Regulations

• Hydraulic and pneumatic courses
• Millwright trade test, since it covers both mechanical and electrical
• Forklift licence for moving heavy parts

• Shift and standby allowances
• Paid overtime on shutdowns
• Chance to study further toward a technician diploma

• Write your trade and trade test year first, then the machines you know, like "Filling lines, pumps, gearboxes".
• If you can machine parts as well as fit them, say so clearly. Many factories want both skills in one person.
