Fix it right the first time: that is the job at this fast-fit tyre and service centre in Midrand. If you learn fast and don't mind being shown things twice, you'll settle in within a few weeks.

You'll be based at a fast-fit tyre and service centre in Midrand. Living nearby, or on a taxi route to it, really helps. The first two weeks are spent shadowing someone experienced.

• Road test vehicles before and after repairs
• Quote extra work you find and pass it to the service advisor for approval
• Carry out scheduled services to the manufacturer's checklist and interval
• Diagnose engine, ABS and airbag faults with an OBD-II diagnostic scanner
• Update control unit software when the manufacturer releases a campaign
• Replace clutches, brake pads, discs, shocks and timing belts
• Coach the apprentice on your bay through basic services

• At least 3 years as a qualified mechanic in a dealership or workshop
• Confident with diagnostic scan tools and wiring diagrams
• Motor mechanic trade test certificate (Red Seal) or occupational certificate at NQF 4
• Able to meet flat-rate or sold-hour targets
• Code 08 licence so you can road test cars
• Your own basic toolbox

• Pay at or above the motor industry bargaining council rates
• Tool allowance or tool insurance
• Staff discount on parts and services
• Manufacturer training courses paid by the dealer

• If you hit or beat your sold-hour target, say by how much. Workshop managers love that number.
