Mechanical Fitter (Shutdowns)

Bearings, gearboxes, pumps and lathes: this general engineering workshop in Pietermaritzburg needs your hands on them. You don't need to be the loudest person in the room, just the one others can count on.

You'll be based at a general engineering workshop in Pietermaritzburg. Living nearby, or on a taxi route to it, really helps. Shifts rotate, so you'll need to be flexible about days and nights.

• Program and run CNC machines from engineering drawings
• Align shafts with a laser alignment tool after every drive change
• Record work and spares used on the job card or CMMS
• Respond to breakdowns and get the line running again safely
• Inspect and adjust conveyors, chains and sprockets
• Maintain hydraulic and pneumatic systems on production lines

• Trade test as Fitter and Turner, Fitter, Millwright or Toolmaker
• Own basic hand tools, or willing to build up a set
• N2 or N3 engineering subjects
• Basic understanding of the General Machinery Regulations
• At least 2 years as a qualified artisan in a factory or workshop
• You read engineering drawings and measure with micrometers and verniers

• Millwright trade test, since it covers both mechanical and electrical
• Hydraulic and pneumatic courses

• Chance to study further toward a technician diploma

• Paid overtime on shutdowns
• Tool allowance

• If you can machine parts as well as fit them, say so clearly. Many factories want both skills in one person.
• Expect a practical test. Measure twice and work cleanly, because the assessor watches your habits as much as the result.
