Job Description

Underground, the miner sets the pace and the safety standard. This mechanised hard-rock mine near Soweto needs that person. You'll work with a small crew, so being easy to work with matters as much as skill.

This post is Soweto-based, with most of your time spent at a mechanised hard-rock mine. Overtime comes up in peak season and is paid.

What you'll actually do

  • Report misfires straight away and handle them strictly by the procedure
  • Bar down loose rock and install support to the section's support standard
  • Hold a start-of-shift safety talk and deal with any unsafe condition
  • Mark off drilling holes to the standard pattern and check the drilling
  • Do the early entry examination and make the workplace safe before the crew enters
  • Test for flammable gas and check ventilation before and after blasting
  • Clear the area, post guards and blast on time as the blasting certificate allows

You'll need

  • Valid blasting certificate issued under the Mine Health and Safety Act
  • Able to lead a crew of 8 to 20 people in a language they understand
  • Grade 12 or equivalent, plus the MQA-accredited miner training
  • No serious safety transgressions in your record

Helpful, not essential

  • Experience in trackless mechanised sections
  • First aid certificate current
