Job Description

The petrochemical shutdown contractor in Durban Central needs a coded welder who can hold a WPS and deliver clean, sound joints. It's the kind of job where doing the basics well every day gets you noticed.

The work is in Durban Central, KwaZulu-Natal, so you'll need a reliable way to get there every day.

What you'll actually do

  • Grind and repair welds flagged by the QC inspector
  • Set up MIG and flux-cored machines for long production runs
  • Roll and form plate for tanks, chutes and hoppers
  • Keep a hot work permit open and a fire watch in place during shutdowns
  • TIG weld stainless steel tanks and fittings with proper back-purging

What you need

  • Willing to work shutdowns, long shifts and weekends when the plant is down
  • At least 2 years of production or site welding after qualifying
  • Steady hands and good eyesight, with or without glasses
  • Boilermaker or welder trade test certificate, or current SAIW welder qualification

Nice if you have

  • Experience on structural work to AWS D1.1
  • Orbital or automatic welding experience

What you get

  • Accommodation and meals paid on out-of-town shutdowns
  • Coding renewals paid by the employer
  • Shutdown bonus and site allowance for work away from home

How to apply

  1. Check you meet the must-haves first; recruiters filter on those before anything else.
  2. Get these ready, because shortlisted people are asked for them straight away: photos of recent work, if you have them, trade test certificate or SAIW qualification plus your ID document or smart ID card copy.
  3. Use the form on this page. It takes about two minutes and you don't need to upload anything yet.
  4. Keep your phone on. Shortlisted applicants are contacted by call, SMS or WhatsApp within 6 working days.

How2Apply never charges you to apply, for training, for uniforms or for a "placement fee". If anyone asks you for money, it is a scam.

Before you hit apply

  • Expired codings are the number one reason welders are turned away at the gate. Check dates before you apply.
  • If you have worked shutdowns, name the type of plant, like refinery or sugar mill. It proves you know the site rules.
