Mine Safety Officer (Underground)

The gold tailings retreatment operation near Atlantis needs someone who knows the MHSA inside out and can coach crews. If you learn fast and don't mind being shown things twice, you'll settle in within a few weeks.

The work is in Atlantis, Western Cape, so you'll need a reliable way to get there every day. Start date: as soon as possible for the right person.

• Track safety statistics like LTIFR and report them each month
• Review baseline and issue-based risk assessments with section managers
• Lead incident investigations using a root cause method
• Train safety representatives and support the health and safety committee
• Prepare for inspections by the mine inspector and follow up on instructions
• Help run emergency drills and check refuge bays
• Keep legal appointments and code of practice records current

• At least 3 years in a safety role at a mine
• Certificate of fitness to go underground or into the pit
• SAMTRAC or an MQA-accredited mine safety qualification
• Code 08 licence for moving around the mine property
• Registered with SAIOSH, or working toward it
• Confident writing investigation reports and presenting findings

• Occupational hygiene registration with the relevant council
• Mine rescue training

• Company vehicle on site
• Standby allowance for incident call-outs
• Retirement fund and medical aid
• CPD and further study funded

• Give numbers: how many investigations you led, or how the LTIFR changed in your section.
• Mention the commodity and whether you worked underground. Mines prefer someone who knows their hazards.
