Mine Safety Officer (Underground)

You'll make safety real on the ground at the mineral processing plant near Kathu, not just on paper. People who do well here are steady, honest and not scared to ask when something is unclear.

The site is in Kathu; early starts mean public transport timing matters, so check your route before applying. The first two weeks are spent shadowing someone experienced.

• Check that crews do planned task observations and pre-shift checks
• Inspect workplaces underground and on surface against the MHSA and the mine's standards
• Track safety statistics like LTIFR and report them each month
• Lead incident investigations using a root cause method
• Take dust, noise and heat measurements with the occupational hygiene team

• Certificate of fitness to go underground or into the pit
• Code 08 licence for moving around the mine property
• Registered with SAIOSH, or working toward it
• SAMTRAC or an MQA-accredited mine safety qualification
• Confident writing investigation reports and presenting findings
• At least 3 years in a safety role at a mine

• ISO 45001 auditing experience
• Occupational hygiene registration with the relevant council

• Standby allowance for incident call-outs
• Retirement fund and medical aid
• CPD and further study funded
• Company vehicle on site

• Show your mining sector safety experience clearly. Construction-only safety CVs are often moved to the no pile.
• Mention the commodity and whether you worked underground. Mines prefer someone who knows their hazards.
