Mine Safety Officer (Underground)

The mining contractor on a platinum lease near Polokwane needs someone who knows the MHSA inside out and can coach crews. You don't need to be the loudest person in the room, just the one others can count on.

You'll be based at a mining contractor on a platinum lease in Polokwane. Living nearby, or on a taxi route to it, really helps. You'll start with a short induction before working on your own.

• Review baseline and issue-based risk assessments with section managers
• Check that crews do planned task observations and pre-shift checks
• Prepare for inspections by the mine inspector and follow up on instructions
• Take dust, noise and heat measurements with the occupational hygiene team
• Train safety representatives and support the health and safety committee
• Track safety statistics like LTIFR and report them each month

• Certificate of fitness to go underground or into the pit
• SAMTRAC or an MQA-accredited mine safety qualification
• Registered with SAIOSH, or working toward it
• Code 08 licence for moving around the mine property
• At least 3 years in a safety role at a mine
• Detailed knowledge of the MHSA and its regulations

• Occupational hygiene registration with the relevant council
• ISO 45001 auditing experience
• Mine rescue training

• Company vehicle on site
• Retirement fund and medical aid
• CPD and further study funded
• Standby allowance for incident call-outs

• Mention the commodity and whether you worked underground. Mines prefer someone who knows their hazards.
• Give numbers: how many investigations you led, or how the LTIFR changed in your section.
