Miner Assistant (Underground)

This underground coal colliery near Mbombela needs a miner who makes every workplace safe before a single hole is drilled. If you turn up on time and finish what you start, you'll fit in quickly.

You'll be based at an underground coal colliery in Mbombela. Living nearby, or on a taxi route to it, really helps. Weekend work is on a roster, so you won't be on every weekend.

• Do the early entry examination and make the workplace safe before the crew enters
• Bar down loose rock and install support to the section's support standard
• Mark off drilling holes to the standard pattern and check the drilling
• Test for flammable gas and check ventilation before and after blasting
• Hold a start-of-shift safety talk and deal with any unsafe condition
• Report misfires straight away and handle them strictly by the procedure
• Record face advance, tons broken and support installed on the shift report

• Sound knowledge of your commodity's mining method and support standards
• At least 3 years underground, with at least 1 as a certificated miner
• Able to lead a crew of 8 to 20 people in a language they understand
• Grade 12 or equivalent, plus the MQA-accredited miner training
• No serious safety transgressions in your record

• First aid certificate current
• Experience in trackless mechanised sections
• Shift Supervisor certificate or Mine Overseer learning

• Pension fund with employer contributions
• Production bonus based on metres or square metres achieved
• Housing or living-out allowance

• Write your blasting certificate number and date of issue near the top of the CV.
• Mines check your safety record with previous employers. Mention any safety awards or zero-harm periods your crew achieved.
