Painter's Assistant (Renovations) – Fixed-Term

You'll mix, carry, dig and clean up so the tradespeople on a low-cost housing development in Stellenbosch can keep building. Good for someone who wants to build a solid track record they can put on their CV.

Home base is a low-cost housing development on the Stellenbosch side of Western Cape. The first two weeks are spent shadowing someone experienced.

• Help offload deliveries of steel, timber and pipes
• Sign the daily safety talk register before work starts
• Set up barriers, cones and signs around open trenches
• Carry bricks, blocks and cement bags to where the bricklayers work
• Pass tools and materials to the plumber or electrician as needed
• Erect and strip shutters and simple scaffolding under supervision

• Physically strong and fit for outdoor work in all weather
• Willing to start early, often at 06:30
• A clean record is preferred for some government sites
• Grade 8 or higher

• Registered on your ward or municipal job-seeker database
• Previous site work you can show with a reference
• A working-at-heights or scaffolding ticket

• Boots, hard hat and overalls issued on site
• Overtime on weekend pours and deadline days
• Learn from artisans with a chance to move up to assistant
• Paid weekly or fortnightly

• Government-funded projects often reserve jobs for people from the local ward. Bring proof of address and ask the site office about the local labour desk.
• If a foreman can vouch for you, put their number on your CV. Site hiring runs on word of mouth.
