Paving Team Labourer

Hard outdoor work on a road rehabilitation project in Bloemfontein, with a chance to learn a trade while you earn. People who do well here are steady, honest and not scared to ask when something is unclear.

You'll be based at a road rehabilitation project in Bloemfontein. Living nearby, or on a taxi route to it, really helps.

• Compact soil and layer bedding sand with a plate compactor
• Mix concrete and mortar by hand or with a small mixer
• Clear rubble and load it into skips
• Erect and strip shutters and simple scaffolding under supervision
• Set up barriers, cones and signs around open trenches
• Pass tools and materials to the plumber or electrician as needed
• Clean tools, mixers and wheelbarrows at the end of each day

• Prepared to travel between sites in the area
• Physically strong and fit for outdoor work in all weather
• You take safety rules seriously and wear full PPE
• Grade 8 or higher
• Willing to start early, often at 06:30
• A clean record is preferred for some government sites

• Living near the site (many projects hire local labour)
• A working-at-heights or scaffolding ticket

• Boots, hard hat and overalls issued on site
• Overtime on weekend pours and deadline days
• Paid weekly or fortnightly
• Learn from artisans with a chance to move up to assistant

• If a foreman can vouch for you, put their number on your CV. Site hiring runs on word of mouth.
• Government-funded projects often reserve jobs for people from the local ward. Bring proof of address and ask the site office about the local labour desk.
