Job Description

You'll plan and teach CAPS lessons that stick at a low-fee private school in Soweto. Someone who likes a bit of variety, but also likes doing things the right way, will enjoy this.

The site is in Soweto; early starts mean public transport timing matters, so check your route before applying. You'll start with a short induction before working on your own.

The work, day to day

  • Set, mark and moderate formal assessment tasks for the term
  • Keep learner profiles and a tidy teacher file for subject advisers
  • Meet parents to discuss progress, behaviour and support plans
  • Plan weekly lessons against the CAPS annual teaching plan
  • Attend staff meetings, subject meetings and district workshops

What you need

  • Full SACE registration (provisional registration only for student or newly qualified teachers)
  • You can manage a class of 35 or more without losing control
  • Clear record on the National Register for Sex Offenders and a police clearance
  • Sound knowledge of CAPS and the assessment policy for your phase

Extra points for

  • Coaching experience in a major school sport
  • Experience marking for the NSC or IEB
  • Honours degree in your subject or in education management

What you get

  • Pension and medical aid for permanent posts
  • Housing allowance for SGB and state-funded posts where it applies
  • Fee discount for your own children at independent schools
  • Paid SACE CPTD workshops

  1. Check you meet the must-haves first; recruiters filter on those before anything else.
  2. Get these ready, because shortlisted people are asked for them straight away: two recent lesson plans you wrote yourself plus police clearance issued in the last 6 months.
  3. Use the form on this page. It takes about two minutes and you don't need to upload anything yet.
  4. Watch for a call or WhatsApp from How2Apply over the next 7 working days.

How to stand out

  • Bring a short sample lesson to the interview; many schools ask you to teach for 15 minutes.
  • Add your matric results or pass rates for your classes if they improved; hard numbers beat adjectives.
