Job Description

The trailer and truck body builder in Soweto needs a coded welder who can hold a WPS and deliver clean, sound joints. Someone who likes a bit of variety, but also likes doing things the right way, will enjoy this.

This post is Soweto-based, with most of your time spent at a trailer and truck body builder. The first two weeks are spent shadowing someone experienced.

What your day looks like

  • Follow the welding procedure specification for every joint you weld
  • Read fabrication drawings and cutting lists before you mark out plate
  • Grind and repair welds flagged by the QC inspector
  • Cut and bevel plate with oxy-fuel, plasma and a bevelling machine
  • Prepare joints for radiographic and dye penetrant testing
  • Keep a hot work permit open and a fire watch in place during shutdowns
  • Weld carbon steel pipe in the 6G position using GTAW root and SMAW fill

You'll need

  • Valid welder coding to ISO 9606-1 or ASME IX in the processes the job needs
  • Willing to work shutdowns, long shifts and weekends when the plant is down
  • Steady hands and good eyesight, with or without glasses
  • Boilermaker or welder trade test certificate, or current SAIW welder qualification
  • You can read fabrication and isometric drawings without help

Helpful, not essential

  • Experience on structural work to AWS D1.1
  • SAIW welding inspector course, even at Level 1
  • Rigging or crane signalling certificate

On offer

  • Coding renewals paid by the employer
  • Leather welding PPE and auto-darkening helmet supplied
  • Accommodation and meals paid on out-of-town shutdowns
  • Shutdown bonus and site allowance for work away from home

How to apply for this job

  1. Make sure the role, the hours and working in Soweto really suit you before you apply.
  2. Have the following on hand (clear photos on your phone are fine at first): current welder coding certificates (check the dates), your ID document or smart ID card copy plus photos of recent work, if you have them.
  3. Use the form on this page. It takes about two minutes and you don't need to upload anything yet.
  4. If you're shortlisted you'll hear from us within 10 working days, usually by phone.

How2Apply recruits for this position on behalf of hiring employers around Soweto; applications go into our talent pool and shortlisted candidates are introduced directly.

How2Apply never charges you to apply, for training, for uniforms or for a "placement fee". If anyone asks you for money, it is a scam.

Tips to get shortlisted

  • Expect a practical welding test on the first day. Bring your own gloves and chipping hammer so you feel at home.
  • List each coding separately with the standard, process, position and expiry date. "Coded welder" on its own tells a recruiter nothing.
