Professional Nurse (Maternity and Labour Ward)

You'll run patient care on a busy shift at a private hospital surgical ward in Paarl, from admission to discharge. People who do well here are steady, honest and not scared to ask when something is unclear.

The site is in Paarl; early starts mean public transport timing matters, so check your route before applying. Start is planned for the beginning of next month.

• Give scheduled medication, including Schedule 5 and 6 drugs, and sign the register
• Report adverse events and near misses on the incident system the same day
• Keep clinical notes clear, timed and signed for audits and legal records
• Take handover at the bedside and plan care for your allocated patients
• Supervise enrolled nurses and nursing assistants on your side of the ward
• Do wound care, catheter care and IV line management to unit protocol
• Take part in ward rounds with doctors and record the new orders

• At least 1 year of post-community-service ward experience
• Valid BLS certificate; ACLS or PALS for ICU and emergency posts
• Clean criminal record
• Calm under pressure when a patient's condition turns quickly
• Solid knowledge of medication safety and the Nursing Act scope of practice
• Current SANC registration as a Professional Nurse, with this year's annual fees paid

• Paid SANC annual fees at some groups
• Night-shift and weekend allowances on top of basic pay
• Medical aid and pension fund contributions after probation

• Check your SANC receipt is for this year before you apply; an unpaid annual fee gets your application parked.
• For night-duty posts, say clearly in your cover note that you want permanent nights, as many applicants only want days.
