Professional Nurse (Medical Ward)

Bring your SANC registration and your ward experience to a provincial district hospital in Durban Central that needs a steady pair of hands. It's the kind of job where doing the basics well every day gets you noticed.

This post is Durban Central-based, with most of your time spent at a provincial district hospital. Most weeks are 45 hours, in line with the BCEA.

• Take part in ward rounds with doctors and record the new orders
• Keep clinical notes clear, timed and signed for audits and legal records
• Supervise enrolled nurses and nursing assistants on your side of the ward
• Prepare patients for theatre and receive them back from recovery
• Give scheduled medication, including Schedule 5 and 6 drugs, and sign the register
• Report adverse events and near misses on the incident system the same day
• Do wound care, catheter care and IV line management to unit protocol

• At least 1 year of post-community-service ward experience
• Solid knowledge of medication safety and the Nursing Act scope of practice
• Valid BLS certificate; ACLS or PALS for ICU and emergency posts
• Clean criminal record
• You can work 12-hour day or night shifts, weekends and public holidays

• IMCI and NIMART training for primary health care work
• Experience with electronic patient records or bedside charting systems

• Study support for post-basic specialities
• Paid SANC annual fees at some groups
• Night-shift and weekend allowances on top of basic pay

• For night-duty posts, say clearly in your cover note that you want permanent nights, as many applicants only want days.
