You'll catch shoplifting and stock losses at a retail distribution centre in Soweto before they cost jobs. Good for someone who wants to build a solid track record they can put on their CV.

This post is Soweto-based, with most of your time spent at a retail distribution centre. Weekend work is on a roster, so you won't be on every weekend.

• Attend court as a witness when a case goes to trial
• Tag high-value stock and check security tags at the doors
• Record every incident with photos, times and value of goods
• Detain suspects lawfully and call SAPS, then write a statement
• Walk the floor in plain clothes and watch for shoplifting behaviour
• Share trends with the store manager each week
• Search staff bags at exit points according to store policy

• Matric or equivalent NQF Level 4
• Able to handle confrontation calmly
• Knowledge of lawful arrest and search under the Criminal Procedure Act
• PSIRA registration, Grade C at least
• Discreet, observant and honest
• Good report writing

• Previous store detective experience with case outcomes
• Understanding of stock systems and shrinkage reports

• Staff discount at the retailer

• Retail trading hours, no night shift in most stores

• Keep your appearance low-key for the interview. Detectives need to blend in with shoppers.
• Give numbers on your CV: how many cases you opened, how many led to arrests. Retail security managers trust results.
