Job Description

This bulk water utility in Soweto needs someone who can check a design and then go and check it was built right. People who do well here are steady, honest and not scared to ask when something is unclear.

This post is Soweto-based, with most of your time spent at a bulk water utility. Most weeks are 45 hours, in line with the BCEA.

The work, day to day

  • Apply for municipal wayleaves and building plan approvals
  • Work out loads to SANS 10160 for buildings and structures
  • Design reinforced concrete and steel structures to SANS 10100 and SANS 10162
  • Check drawings from technicians and sign them for issue
  • Design water pipelines, sewers and stormwater systems with hydraulic software
  • Write design reports and handover documents
  • Act as resident engineer: inspect works, measure quantities and certify payments

You'll need

  • BEng, BSc Eng or BTech in Civil Engineering
  • At least 3 years in design or construction supervision
  • Registered with ECSA as a professional or candidate
  • Experience with structural or hydraulic design software

Extra points for

  • Master's degree in structural or water engineering
  • Contract management training for NEC or GCC
  • Experience on public sector infrastructure projects
