Safety Officer (Open Pit Operations)

Plan inspections, lead investigations and build a safer shift culture at the mineral processing plant near Gqeberha. If you learn fast and don't mind being shown things twice, you'll settle in within a few weeks.

This post is in Gqeberha (Eastern Cape). Please only apply if you can travel there daily.

• Track safety statistics like LTIFR and report them each month
• Keep legal appointments and code of practice records current
• Review baseline and issue-based risk assessments with section managers
• Check that crews do planned task observations and pre-shift checks
• Inspect workplaces underground and on surface against the MHSA and the mine's standards

• Code 08 licence for moving around the mine property
• SAMTRAC or an MQA-accredited mine safety qualification
• Detailed knowledge of the MHSA and its regulations
• Certificate of fitness to go underground or into the pit
• At least 3 years in a safety role at a mine
• Registered with SAIOSH, or working toward it

• Diploma or degree in Safety Management or Environmental Health
• Occupational hygiene registration with the relevant council

• CPD and further study funded
• Standby allowance for incident call-outs
• Company vehicle on site
• Retirement fund and medical aid

• Mention the commodity and whether you worked underground. Mines prefer someone who knows their hazards.
• Show your mining sector safety experience clearly. Construction-only safety CVs are often moved to the no pile.
