Safety Officer (Open Pit Operations)

You'll make safety real on the ground at the open-pit coal mine near Thohoyandou, not just on paper. This is a good step for someone who wants proper routine and a manager who notices good work.

You'll report in Thohoyandou. Relocation is not covered for this one. Start date: as soon as possible for the right person.

• Take dust, noise and heat measurements with the occupational hygiene team
• Lead incident investigations using a root cause method
• Prepare for inspections by the mine inspector and follow up on instructions
• Check that crews do planned task observations and pre-shift checks
• Train safety representatives and support the health and safety committee
• Help run emergency drills and check refuge bays
• Inspect workplaces underground and on surface against the MHSA and the mine's standards

• Certificate of fitness to go underground or into the pit
• Detailed knowledge of the MHSA and its regulations
• SAMTRAC or an MQA-accredited mine safety qualification
• Code 08 licence for moving around the mine property
• At least 3 years in a safety role at a mine
• Confident writing investigation reports and presenting findings

• ISO 45001 auditing experience
• Mine rescue training
• Occupational hygiene registration with the relevant council

• Standby allowance for incident call-outs
• CPD and further study funded
• Retirement fund and medical aid
• Company vehicle on site
