Seasonal Fruit Picker (Citrus Harvest)

You'll pick, prune and look after crops on a citrus farm near Mossel Bay through the season. You don't need to be the loudest person in the room, just the one others can count on.

This post is Mossel Bay-based, with most of your time spent at a citrus farm. The first two weeks are spent shadowing someone experienced.

• Tie up tomato and pepper plants in tunnels
• Plant seedlings in rows at the spacing shown
• Clean and store picking bags, ladders and secateurs
• Follow the re-entry times after spraying, as the signs show
• Wash hands and use the field toilets for food safety
• Fill crates or bins and carry them to the collection point
• Weed beds by hand or with a hoe

• Careful with fruit, since bruised fruit is rejected
• Able to work outdoors in heat, cold and rain
• Valid ID or work permit
• Available for the full harvest season
• Willing to start at sunrise

• Previous harvest or picking experience
• Living on or near the farm

• Farm transport from nearby towns
• Chance of a permanent post after good seasons
• Piece-rate bonus on top of daily wage
• Seasonal accommodation on some farms

• If you have picked before, say which crop and how many seasons. Farms rehire experienced pickers first.
• Have your bank details ready. Most farms pay into a bank account and will not start you without it.
