Job Description

Roads, water, buildings: the municipal infrastructure department in Tembisa needs a civil engineer who can take a project from design to site. It suits someone who likes knowing exactly what a good day's work looks like.

This post is Tembisa-based, with most of your time spent at a municipal infrastructure department. Shifts rotate, so you'll need to be flexible about days and nights.

The work, day to day

Write design reports and handover documents
Work out loads to SANS 10160 for buildings and structures
Design reinforced concrete and steel structures to SANS 10100 and SANS 10162
Design water pipelines, sewers and stormwater systems with hydraulic software
Act as resident engineer: inspect works, measure quantities and certify payments

What you need

Able to explain technical issues to clients and contractors
BEng, BSc Eng or BTech in Civil Engineering
Experience with structural or hydraulic design software
Registered with ECSA as a professional or candidate
Good grasp of South African design codes for your field
At least 3 years in design or construction supervision

Helpful, not essential

Master's degree in structural or water engineering
Contract management training for NEC or GCC
