Transport Controller (Long Haul Fleet) – Experienced

Behind every truck on the road is a controller; at a road freight company in Cape Town CBD, that could be you. Bring a calm head on busy days and you'll be fine.

You'll be based at a road freight company in Cape Town CBD. Living nearby, or on a taxi route to it, really helps. The first two weeks are spent shadowing someone experienced.

• Phone drivers when trucks stop too long or go off-route
• Check driver hours so nobody drives too long without rest
• Assign trucks and drivers to routes and track them on telematics
• Book vehicle services, licence renewals and roadworthy tests
• Compile daily reports on trips completed and late deliveries
• Update customers on delivery times and delays
• Capture trip sheets, fuel and toll costs on the system

• Clear on the phone with drivers and customers
• Knowledge of South African road freight regulations
• At least 2 years in transport or logistics
• Able to work shifts in a 24-hour control office
• Good with Excel and email
• Calm and decisive when things go wrong

• Logistics or supply chain certificate
• Transport management system (TMS) experience

• Cellphone allowance for standby shifts
• Office-based work with a steady roster
• Training on the fleet and tracking systems

• If you drove trucks before, say so. Controllers who know the road earn quick respect from drivers.
• Give the fleet size and route types you handled, for example "40 trucks, long-haul and local". Hiring managers want scale.
