Bricklayer's Assistant

You'll mix, carry, dig and clean up so the tradespeople on a school building project in Benoni can keep building. You don't need to be the loudest person in the room, just the one others can count on.

Home base is a school building project on the Benoni side of Gauteng.

• Carry bricks, blocks and cement bags to where the bricklayers work
• Erect and strip shutters and simple scaffolding under supervision
• Clean tools, mixers and wheelbarrows at the end of each day
• Cut and lay paving bricks along string lines
• Compact soil and layer bedding sand with a plate compactor
• Dig trenches and foundations to the depth the foreman marks

• Physically strong and fit for outdoor work in all weather
• Grade 8 or higher
• Prepared to travel between sites in the area
• Able to follow instructions from a foreman or artisan
• A clean record is preferred for some government sites
• Willing to start early, often at 06:30

• Boots, hard hat and overalls issued on site
• Paid weekly or fortnightly
• Learn from artisans with a chance to move up to assistant
• Overtime on weekend pours and deadline days

• If a foreman can vouch for you, put their number on your CV. Site hiring runs on word of mouth.
• Government-funded projects often reserve jobs for people from the local ward. Bring proof of address and ask the site office about the local labour desk.
